Every year around mid-September it starts again: a fine layer of hair on the sofa, on your black coat and across the car seats. Dogs change their coat in autumn and from then on removing dog hair stops being a five-minute job. The good news is that, done in the right order, it takes far less time than working through half a pack of sticky sheets.
Why your dog is shedding so much right now
Dogs shed according to daylight hours, not temperature. As soon as the days get shorter, the body drops the summer undercoat to make room for a denser winter one. Double-coated breeds – husky, golden retriever, German shepherd, border collie – shed in whole tufts. Short-haired dogs such as a labrador or a dachshund shed a finer hair that works its way much deeper into fabric.
A dog that lives mostly indoors under artificial light usually sheds less dramatically, but a little all year round. That is normal. Bald patches, dandruff or itching are not: in that case a trip to the vet is worth more than a new brush.
How to remove dog hair from the sofa
- Take the cushions out and shake them, ideally outside. Most of the hair is not sitting on the fabric, it is down in the seams underneath.
- Put on a rubber washing-up glove and dampen it slightly. Sweep your hand in short strokes, always in the same direction: the hair rolls into little balls you can pick up in one go. It lifts far more than the vacuum does.
- Vacuum afterwards, using the narrow nozzle along seams, backrest and folds.
- Finish with a roller. A self-cleaning reusable lint roller empties into its own base, so you never get stranded halfway through with no sticky sheets left.
On leather and smooth fabrics a spray bottle works well: mist very lightly and drag towards you with a microfibre cloth. Velvet and corduroy never get wet: there, use a dry glove or a soft brush, always with the nap of the fabric.
Clothes: start with the dryer, not the washing machine
The step that pays off happens before washing. Put the garment in the tumble dryer for ten minutes on cold or on the air programme, with a dryer ball or a damp cloth. The drum loosens the hair and the lint filter catches it. Empty that filter, then wash.
If the garment cannot go in the dryer, lay it flat and run the damp glove or the roller over it. Do not put hair-covered clothes straight into the wash: once wet, the hair bonds to the fibres and will not come out. A splash of cleaning vinegar in the softener compartment relaxes the fibres and cuts static, so less hair clings on. When you finish a load like that, run a short empty rinse and clean the machine filter.
Rugs, carpet and car upholstery
Here the best tool is a rubber window squeegee: pull it in short strokes and the hair lifts in rolls. On short-pile carpet a pumice stone also works, but test it first in a corner nobody sees. Then vacuum in a cross pattern – lengthways first, then across – because hair always lies flat in one direction.
Same story in the car: glove on the seats, squeegee on the mats. Take the mats out and shake them before you start, otherwise you are just moving the hair around.
Less hair at the source
Cleaning helps, but brushing is what you really notice. During peak shedding, brush your dog for ten minutes three or four times a week, outdoors or in the hallway. For a double coat, use an undercoat rake or a deshedding brush; for short hair, a brush or a rubber glove is enough.
- Do not bathe your dog more than necessary: over-washing dries the skin out and that causes even more shedding.
- Omega 3 fatty acids in their food (salmon or flaxseed oil) support skin and coat. Check the dose with your vet.
- Never shave a double coat. The undercoat insulates against cold and heat alike, and it tends to grow back patchy.
- A blanket on your dog's usual spot on the sofa catches almost everything. It goes in the wash once a week and saves you the whole routine.
What does not work
Anti-static wipes run over the sofa only lift the surface layer. Vacuuming without dragging first leaves the embedded hair exactly where it was. And cleaning daily while never brushing the dog is wasted effort: in peak shedding season it looks the same again within a day.
